Chad Mendes was flagged this month for a “potential” violation of the USADA drug testing policy, and to this point it’s still unclear for what substance he tested positive.
The featherweight’s first comments on the matter haven’t shed much light on things quite yet, either, though it gives a potential hint.
I didn’t do my homework and that was a big mistake. I own it and I’m going to pay for it.

We’ll get more information once Mendes goes through the process with USADA, and he’ll be facing up to a two year sanction from the UFC’s drug testing partner.
Penick’s Analysis: It’s another case of a fighter not admitting intentional PED use, and perhaps that’s the case, but again until we know what the substance is it’s hard to entirely form an opinion. If he took something not necessarily performance enhancing but nevertheless on the banned list that he didn’t look into, it’s definitely on him. If it was something he should have known yet took anyway, that’s also on him. Either way, he’s seemingly taking responsibility for it after the fact, and that could keep him out of the cage for the next two years.
