Jon Jones has tried to downplay the traffic stop which brought him an extra three days of community service and will bring him to traffic court next month, but audio of the stop has now been released that paints a very different scene.

The audio, released via TMZ Sports, shows that Jones was pulled over for going 75 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone, which the officer tells him could have gotten him a “reckless driving” citation. Further, Jones’ feigns ignorance of driving laws during the stop, claiming to not know he couldn’t drive without insurance and that he thought his passport – which he also didn’t have on him – sufficed as driving identification.

The officer let Jones off with the citation of not having his license, insurance, or registration for the vehicle – which was in Jones’ fiance’s name – saying that he was “getting a huge break” given his excessive speeding.

He further reprimanded Jones, saying at the end of the audio clip, “Just drive normal, okay? I mean, yeah you got a cool car but there’s no need to go drive crazy and kill somebody or kill yourself. It ain’t worth it dude.”

Penick’s Analysis: Jones was admonishing this as a story at all by snidely commenting about “tickets” while he was “trying to win a world title,” but this is very much a cause for scrutiny given his own history driving. That he would drive 40 miles an hour over the speed limit in what was likely a residential area given said limit is absolutely asinine after he was in a hit and run last year. That’s extremely reckless, extremely dangerous, and once again could have led to another accident or serious injury to another person. If he can’t be bothered to drive responsibly, he shouldn’t be driving at all, and to try to write criticism off is an unfortunate sign that perhaps he still hasn’t learned even after all the things he’s been through in the last couple of years. Here’s to hoping this time is the last, but that shouldn’t be expected anymore given this added information.
