Mike Pierce, Danny Castillo reportedly among ten fighters recently released by the UFC

It seems the UFC has made another round of cuts after their latest slate of events, with ten fighters getting their profiles removed from the “active roster” section of UFC.com.

According to UFCFIGHTERSiNFO, which runs a script to pull changes from the UFC’s database, ten fighters are on their way out after recent defeats. The latest deletions from the list on Friday are as follows: Steve Montgomery, Marcio Alexandre Jr, Danny Castillo, Mike Pierce, Konstantin Erokhin, Valmir Lazaro, Akbarh Arreola, Steve Kennedy, Hayder Hassan, and Marcin Wrzosek.

Of those names, Mike Pierce and Danny Castillo stand out, with lengthy tenures for both coming to an end. Pierce’s release especially comes as a surprise; he returned in December for his first fight since having his knee shredded by Rousimar Palhares in October of 2013, and lost a decision to Ryan LaFlare. He had won four fights in a row prior to that two fight stretch.

As for Castillo, his release is less surprising off of four straight losses in the Octagon. That brought his UFC record down to an even 7-7 through 14 appearances. The rest of the releases came to fighters who had limited Octagon experience and limited to no experience in the organization.

Penick’s Analysis: I’m really surprised by the Pierce release, especially given his two losses were spread more than two years apart due to the actions of Palhares. Still, it was two straight losses when they have way too many fighters on the roster as it is. For the rest on this list, there really aren’t any surprises.
