Miesha Tate is hoping to return to action this February, and though she’s still hoping for a title fight with newly crowned champ Holly Holm, she understands it might not be in the cards.
“I’m not exactly sure who yet, but I would like for it to be the title fight,” Tate said in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. “But that doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen. So I’m just waiting to hear back from the UFC.”
The rematch between Holm and Ronda Rousey is likely for UFC 200 next July, but Tate doesn’t think it will be the best move for Rousey given how the UFC 193 main event played out, not to mention the distractions still coming in early 2016.
“I’m not a fan of the rematch in that amount of time, because with everything else that Ronda has going on, plus her injuries, I just don’t think it’s going to amount to a good outcome. It wasn’t a competitive fight, and Holly has the perfect style to beat Ronda.
“Holly’s already back in the gym training; she had no injuries from the fight. She knows she’s fighting Ronda next, but she gets this whole time to fix maybe even the little things she wanted to improve on in the fight. She’s going to be even more prepared, and I don’t know if it’s a smart move, because Ronda might go 0-2.”
Penick’s Analysis: There’s every possibility Rousey goes 0-2 against Holm, and if that happens she might make her way out of the sport. Tate will be in line to face Holm at that point, but if Rousey beats Holm in the rematch expect a rubber match after that. Tate’s got to hope for Rousey to lose a second time, because that’s the quickest way for her to get that long-awaited second shot at a UFC title, but Rousey can’t be underestimated either. There’s a lot on the line in that UFC 200 matchup if and when it happens, and she’ll have to be even better prepared for Holm’s game after experiencing it first hand.
