“Right after the fight, Dana walked in the locker room and told me my next fight would be a title eliminator against Frankie Edgar because Conor was moving up to lightweight as he was struggling to make weight. Of course I want a rematch with him, since there was no fight. None of us fought, he just connected one good punch and that was it. Cool, congratulations, but that wasn’t what people expected. I live for tomorrow, though. If it’s a rematch or a title fight, it doesn’t matter, I know we will fight again and I know I will win. I know I’m capable. For my next step, I don’t see another fight and I also won’t accept a fight that isn’t for the title.”
-Jose Aldo talks to Portal do Vale Tudo in Brazil about why he’s only interested in fighting for the title, and won’t accept any other fight (translated by Lucas Rezende at BloodyElbow.com).
Penick’s Analysis: With McGregor not being forced to vacate the Featherweight Title in order to fight Rafael dos Anjos, the idea of Aldo-Edgar 2 for that belt is off the table. Aldo’s either going to have to face someone else to keep himself busy, or he’s going to be waiting for a considerable amount of time. The plan seems to be Frankie Edgar getting the next shot after McGregor fights dos Anjos, and if McGregor captures the Lightweight Title he’ll need to fit in a defense of that belt as well, leaving the Aldo rematch much further down the line than it initially could have been. I think we’ll wind up seeing Aldo give in at some point unless the UFC skips over Edgar once more.
