3 Fights To Watch 1/13/24

Magomed Ankalaev vs Johnny Walker

Lets hope this one ends better than the last one. We were all disappointed in a no contest but hey, stuff happens. Walker is still explosive and my favorite to win but Ankalaev is not a newcomer when it comes to ending fights. I believe that Walker can get back on the path to a title shot, Magomed Ankalaev stands directly in the way of that path. Putting down a name like Johnny Walker will most certainly put Ankalaev on the path Walker seeks.

Jim Miller vs Gabriel Benitez

Fun fun fun! Fam favorite Jim Miller will go submission for submission with Benitez for the full 3 rounds I’m sure…or at least I hope. This is the kind of fight that can easily end via knockout though. These two guys will be trying this gs to get the advantage in ways they aren’t used to to get this win. This is just going to be good ole fashioned fun, doesn’t matter who does what after this fight; let’s just enjoy it for what it is.

Andrei Arlovski vs Waldo Cortes-Acosta

One loss, that’s it! Waldo Cortes-Acosta hasn’t really tasted defeat and is likely not to find it here in this fight. Somebody has to lose, someone has to provide a body, Arlovski has become that sacrifice to the MMA prelims gods. Hate to see Arlovski setup like this but at least he’s doing what he wants to do. He will make perfect fodder for the career of Waldo, furthering his quest for thee ever elusive title shot.

Final take

I’m not terribly impressed by this card but it’s not that bad. It is pretty weak to start the year off with but hey, sometimes you need a first down before you get a touchdown. I’ll be watching, it’s certainly that interesting, just not impressive. UFC has been impressive in a while, they need ro do that this year, ALL year.
