Should UFC re-book Dustin Poirier vs. Nate Diaz once Poirier is healthy or is there a better fight for Diaz in the near future?

Cole Henry, MMATorch Live Events Reporter

Yes, I think they should. But if Nate Diaz stalls he should be passed over because at this point I think that Poirier should only be a fight or two from a title shot and I don’t think he should have to wait on Diaz.

I think so. The only other fight that’s really out there for Diaz is the rubber match with Conor McGregor. I’m firmly of the mindset that Tony Ferguson should be the one to challenge UFC Lightweight Champion Khabib Nurmagomedov so I think a title shot is out of the question. That leaves either re-booking the Poirier fight or doing another McGregor fight. I think either of those would be fine. Part of me would like to see Diaz fight Justin Gaethje but I’m not sure if that would be attractive enough for Diaz.

Now that we have an outcome to the Khabib Nurmagomedov-Conor McGregor fight, Dustin Poirier against Nate Diaz makes a little less sense. The conspiracy theorist in me wonders is Poirier was “asked” to pull out of this fight so that UFC could set up McGregor-Diaz 3. I wonder this because if Diaz were to fight at UFC 230 this coming weekend, who knows when they could get him to fight again. With McGregor coming off a loss and Diaz having so few fights he’s willing to take, McGregor being one of them, McGregor-Diaz 3 is the fight I would make. Diaz and Poirier was a fun idea and made sense when McGregor was otherwise occupied, but for now, a McGregor trilogy fight is the way to go.
