ROUNDTABLE: How interested are you in a Khabib Nurmagomedov-Floyd Mayweather fight?

How interested are you in a Khabib Nurmagomedov-Floyd Mayweather fight? Do you take the talk seriously?

Cole Henry, MMATorch Live Events Reporter

Look I would watch because I am shameless but I’m not really interested at all on the surface. Without the threat of the takedown I don’t think Khabib is much of a threat at all on the feet. I really don’t have much else to say about it. Conor McGregor may have had no chance at beating Floyd but at least he had a high light reel of knockouts to convince some people. I just don’t really want to see it.

I have zero interest in this, and I think it’s a ridiculous ploy by Mayweather to keep his name in the news. I can’t say a zero percent chance because anything is possible but I think there’s maybe a 1% chance this fight happens. For one, Khabib isn’t a huge draw like McGregor is. Secondly, he would lose badly in this fight. Third, why would Mayweather even want this fight over someone else who could help him draw more interest? Nurmagomedov is a tremendous fighter, but he has nothing to gain from this except money, and he’s never struck me as the type to put that high a priority on money. Mayweather wants to keep his name out there and this is one of the best ways to do that.

If less than zero was a real number, I would slap that baby on this question.

After McGregor-Mayweather it is hard not take this type of talk seriously. But I don’t think this will actually materialize. Khabib Nurmagomedov is a big star, but not big enough for this. If Ragin Al can out-box Nurmagomedov…

My interest level in this fight is entirely in-step with the likelihood of it happening. So right now I’m only half-way interested. When Mayweather-McGregor was first presented as a possibility, it seemed like nothing more than a pipe dream publicity stunt. The fact that it came to be makes me take the prospect of Mayweather-Khabib much more seriously. It makes no sense – but neither did Mayweather-McGregor. It made no sense until it happened at least, and then it made all the sense in the world. We know that Mayweather will come out of retirement to take an easy fight and payday. We know that UFC is willing to work with Mayweather if there’s money to be made. We also know that fighting Mayweather can increase a UFC fighter’s profile and drawing ability when he gets back in UFC. My guess is that this fight is more likely to happen than most of us would like it to be.
