Eddie Alvarez signs with ONE FC

In what may be the biggest acquisition in the promotion’s history, ONE FC has announced Eddie Alvarez has signed with the promotion.Reports had surfaced late last week that the deal was close to being signed and ONE made it official today with a tweet from CEO Chatri Sityodtong.

The tweet includes a video of Alvarez signing his contract and he shares a few thoughts on his new home.

“This couldn’t have went any smoother,” Alvarez said after showing his signed contract. “It didn’t take too long. I’m super excited, the ‘Underground King’ is coming to ONE FC.”

The former UFC lightweight champion then showed a shelving unit holding his UFC belt. Alvarez then pointed out an empty shelf, presumably a holding spot for a future ONE FC championship belt.

ONE Championship is an Asia based MMA promotion. They have shows upcoming in Singapore, Jakarta, Manila, and Kuala Lumpur.

Hiscoe’s Analysis: This is a big signing for ONE and presumably a a good money deal for Alvarez. Ben Askren did well for himself in ONE FC but is now retired. Alvarez can take over the role Askren filled as the American face of the company. ONE doesn’t have the level of competition of UFC or even Bellator, but with Alvarez in the fold, it may make future free agents keep the promotion in mind as a viable option.
