“Mighty Mouse” needs more money if the UFC wants him to move up

Demetrious Johnson is a great champion, but most people don’t know that and a good number of the ones that do just simply don’t care. He is a small guy, and though he is entertaining, for whatever reason he just doesn’t seem to appeal to fans. Some blame the UFC for this, saying that they haven’t done enough to promote the long-time champion, while others blame his size for his lack of popularity. Whatever it is, most people seem to agree that one way to get over the hump would be a super fight with a bantamweight, which is something that Johnson is open to under the right conditions. Johnson wants more money to move up, which is a logical request, but it does leave you wondering about his legacy and his future earnings potential if he stays at 125.

Cole’s Analysis: One of the things that make Conor McGregor so popular is the perception that he takes on all comers. Sure, some MMA fans disagree, but casual fans see him as a guy that has fought in several weight classes, has won several titles, and even moved over to boxing to face the best that they had to offer. So, while I do understand Johnson not wanting to move until he gets more money, it seems very likely that a move up is a step TOWARDS getting more money. The UFC doesn’t value him like they should, and that’s unfortunate, so he has to make himself stick out and refusing to move to take interesting fights will not help him in that regard.
