The UFC has yet to announce a replacement to face Daniel Cormier on Saturday’s UFC 200 card, with UFC President Dana White saying only that Cormier will fight and that he’s been working on it all day. However, according to a report from Globo in Brazil, that opponent may be one Anderson Silva.
Per the report, Silva has agreed to the fight, though they’re still in the process of determining at what weight the fight would take place. Should it come together, Cormier’s UFC Light Heavyweight Title would not be on the line.
The fight is still not yet official, and according to at least one reported comment Cormier’s camp wasn’t yet aware of the bout. Additionally, UFC President Dana White said late this afternoon on Fox that they’ve narrowed it down to two options.
Penick’s Analysis: It wouldn’t be the first time one side has agreed to a fight only to not have it come together, so while the Combate report may be technically true it doesn’t mean the UFC will indeed go with that fight. If they’re down to two options and Silva is just one of them, they may still go with their other option. Silva stepping up to fight Cormier on three days notice is insanity if it comes to fruition, but certainly adds another huge name to the mix for Saturday night.
UPDATE: Dana White was quick on the denial to this report from Globo, though he still hasn’t yet announced an opponent.
