Ronda Rousey’s trainer Edmond Tarverdyan suspended three months, fined $5,000 by CSAC

Ronda Rousey’s trainer Edmond Tarverdyan had his second’s license revoked this year by the California State Athletic Commission, and during the commission’s February meeting on Tuesday they officially suspended him for three months and fined him $5,000, according to a report from MMAFighting.com.

Tarverdyan’s license revocation and suspension came because he falsified his application by failing to disclose past criminal history stemming from a 2010 arrest on felony identity theft and resisting arrest. Per the report, the identity theft charges were later reduced to misdemeanors, and he wound up spending a day in jail after pleading no contest.

The trainer gave a statement to the commission prior to Tuesday’s hearing, apologizing for his lack of disclosure.

I want to first and foremost apologize to Executive Officer Andy Foster and the honorable commissioners. I take my position and role in combat sports very seriously, and I regret if this matter has caused any embarrassment to the California State Athletic Commission.

In my life, I have not concealed my past indiscretions from people I come into contact with. And I do not want to do so in this instance. I train many young athletes and when I see that they are heading down the wrong path in life, I often remind them of the mistakes and regrets of my past as a way to guide them onto the right track in life. I hope to continue to take the opportunity to help others in combat sports to make the correct moral and ethical decisions in their lives. And I intend to make the correct decisions in my life as well.

Penick’s Analysis: There have been a number of issues with Tarverdyan as of late, and this is just the latest. It’s one of many things leading to the way Rousey’s mother feels about him, and though it’s not changing Rousey’s decision to keep working with him, there’s concern over her continued association with him.
