Khabib Nurmagomedov after latest injury setback: “I’m not sure if I will ever come back”

Khabib Nurmagomedov has serious doubts about his fighting future after his latest injury setback.

The undefeated Dagestani lightweight was forced out of a fight with Tony Ferguson on The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale this week due to a rib injury, and in a post on his Instagram account on Friday, he expressed concern about whether or not he’ll be able to make it back to the cage.

“I want to apologize to my fans. I broke my rib, and again I am out of the fight,” Nurmagomedov wrote. “I really wanted to come back, I’m not sure if I will ever come back. Thanks to my fans and my sponsors. Praise to Allah.”

The 27-year-old amassed a 22-0 record, culminating in a decision win over now-UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael dos Anjos last April before a continued series of injury setbacks.

Penick’s Analysis: It would be a shame to lose such a talented competitor entirely, and it’s a really awful spot for him given how close to the top spot he was. Hopefully he can make a full recovery from this and actually get back into the cage, but clearly it’s hurting him mentally to keep coming up injured. It’s highly unfortunate overall, but here’s to hoping he gets himself back in the cage by early 2016.
