Matt Hughes update

A friend of Matt Hughes has announced that the former UFC Welterweight Champion is recovering and was actually allowed out of the hospital to go eat dinner. A picture of Hughes was posted, and while he has clearly lost some weight, he appeared to be in good spirits.

Hughes was seriously injured when his truck was struck by a train. He was in a coma for quite some time. The friend, Tony Zucca, also said that Hughes told him he “still has one more round” left in him. Hughes had been talking about an MMA return before the accident, so the competitive juices are still there. In fact, he was supposed to grapple Renzo Gracie a few weeks back, but it was cancelled due to Hughes injures.

Cole’s Analysis: In the meantime, though, I know I am speaking for everybody when I say that I hope for Hughes to have a quick and successful recovery. Of course, this will be a process for Hughes, and he still has a long road ahead of him, but it would be a great story if he could somehow make it back to the mats for perhaps a grappling match or something.

Luke Rockhold comments on Chris Weidman rematch

Following his recent victory over Kelvin Gastelum, Chris Weidman made some statements about being the true Middleweight Champion and, while it was likely just an attempt to get a shot at Michael Bisping, it seems it upset a few other people as well, namely Luke Rockhold.

He commented that he wasn’t overly impressed with Weidman’s win over Gastelum, whom he called a welterweight. When asked about a potential rematch with Weidman, he was less than receptive, saying “for his sake, I hope not.”

Cole’s Analysis: Rockhold’s memory of the first fight between these two has always been a little off, in my opinion. It was a much closer fight than he would like to admit, and acting like a rematch is unnecessary is a bit funny considering what happened in his own rematch with Bisping, and seeing as how he seems to be writing Weidman off in the same way, it’s possible a mental mistake in a rematch could bite him again.

The bottom line is that both of these guys have fallen from the spots they were in when they fought the first time. Weidman is at least coming off of a win; Rockhold cannot say the same. Once he gets a win under his belt, this may be a fight we see happen again, but until then it’s just two guys talking. I don’t mean to rant on Rockhold here, but he just seems really bitter now since he lost the belt, but nobody took that belt from him, he lost it due to his own actions. Hopefully he moves forward here and is able to reclaim some of the hype that surrounded him when he first won the belt.
