A fluky night of fights in New Jersey at UFC 159 led to six indefinite medical suspensions, with the most notable being UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones. The 25-year-old Champ tied Tito Ortiz's record for most consecutive with a first round TKO over Chael Sonnen, but he suffered a freak injury near the end of the fight when his toe just snapped while pushing across the mat.
Because of that injury, Jones was given an indefinite suspension, keeping him out of action until the foot is cleared.
Joining him with indefinite suspensions were Alan Belcher, Phil Davis, Jim Miller, Yancy Medeiros, and Gian Villante, all for varying ailments that must be cleared before they return. Eight others on the card received suspensions between 30-60 days for everything from knockout losses to lacerations. The full list of medical suspensions is below:
Indefinite suspensions:
* Jon Jones pending orthopedic clearance of left foot
* Alan Belcher pending ophthalmological clearance of right eye
* Phil Davis pending orthopedic clearance of left knee/X-ray of left thumb
* Jim Miller pending CT scan; out minimum of 60 days
* Yancy Medeiros pending orthopedic clearance of right thumb
* Gian Villante pending ophthalmological clearance of left eye and X-rays of lower leg/ankle
60-day suspensions:
* Johnny Bedford (facial laceration)
* Kurt Holobaugh (facial laceration)
45-day suspensions:
* Chael Sonnen (facial laceration)
* Pat Healy (facial lacerations)
* Steven Siler (scalp laceration)
