MMATorch.com had the opportunity to catch up with “The Texas Crazy Horse" Heath Herring this weekend in Calgary. Herring was at the King of the Cage event where he was providing color commentary for their television taping. The event was held at the Stampede Corral an is expected to air in Canada on The Sports Network in the coming weeks.
When asked about the prospects of seeing him fight in North America, Herring said that he was really looking forward to fighting this side of the Pacific. He said "Fighting in North America would be good especially since the sport is getting so huge here."
The hurdle right now is his contract with K-1. He explained that K-1 has treated him poorly since early in their contract. Herring went on to say that the situation with K-1 has deteriorated since the kiss incident. That was at K-1's New Year's Eve show where Yoshihiro Nakao kissed Herring during their pre-match stare down. Herring retaliated by punching Nakao in the face, knocking him to the mat. Nakao didn't recover and the match was ruled a no contest.
I asked Herring if that punch could have really done enough damage to knock Nakao silly. He said he was surprised to have done so much damage with his punch. When I asked if he thought Nakao had embellished things Herring didn't want to speculate. He laughed and said "I'd like to think I have that much strength in my punch."
Regarding The Ultimate Fighter show. Herring said, "It's a great marketing tool for the UFC, but not much else." He added that he thought some of their fighters might be being taken advantage of. I asked if he was referring to the fact that the UFC appears to be making wads of cash these days while some of the fighter paydays look quite meager in comparison. He said that that looked to be the case but that he believed the situation was changing. He explained that with fight organizations like the IFL, WFA, and WEC coming along some of the fighter paycheck's were getting better. He said that was a good thing and that no one wants a monopoly.
Herring wouldn't speculate on which organization he might fight for in the States. He said that until his contract situation with K-1 was resolved, there was little he could discuss.
Fight fans in North America are no doubt hoping that his contract dispute can get resolved quickly so that we can can see "The Texas Crazy Horse" in action again soon.
