3 UK prospects to watch in 2020

3 UK prospects to watch in 2020

In this article I will be discussing 3 MMA fighters hailing from the United Kingdom who you should keep an eye out for in 2020. I will be looking to provide detailed insights into the fighters’ profile, amateur careers (where applicable) and fighting background (where available).

James Webb 6-1-1 (Cage Warriors)

Kicking things off is Cage Warriors Middleweight World Champion, James Webb.

Webb came into MMA with a very high-level of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu knowledge, he is a 5-time national champion and boy does it show in his performances.

His current professional record sits at 6-1-1 with an amateur record of 1-0. Five of his six professional wins have come via submission and to go even further into that stat, three of his victories have come from a rear-naked choke and one with an arm triangle choke.

James Webb is in the perfect place right now to accomplish his goals in the sport.

Webb always promises that the fight will not go the distance and minus the controversial draw with Nathius Frederick, he hasn’t been wrong yet. Webb is an opportunist through and through, which is reflected in his career path so far and his high-level submission offense. It doesn’t matter when and how, if the moment James Webb is looking for arises, he will lock you up and secure the victory.

Webb is pencilled in for a rematch with Nathius Frederick after their controversial draw back in June. This is due to take place at Cage Warriors 111 at the 02 Arena, London. James will undoubtedly want to return to winning ways and continue his rise in the game!

Alfie Davis 12-3 (Bellator)

Next up is Alfie Davis. Fighting out of London Shootfighters, Davis has earned a huge reputation in the UK MMA scene mainly for his striking ability. His current professional record sits at 12-3 and an amateur record of 2-0, five of his victories have come via KO/TKO, three of his victories have come via submission and seven have come via decision.

Davis has extensive MMA experience and has dedicated his life to martial arts. He is a professional kickboxer who has a world title in K1 Kickboxing and two world titles in the sport of MMA.  Alfie has also won Silver medals in the WAKO World and WAKO European Kickboxing Championships and is a Ten Time British Kickboxing Champion.

Davis has shown he can win by any means necessary, which makes him a very difficult opponent to face. He’s shown his versatility in all of his victories especially in his submission game where none of his submissions have been the same (brabo choke, triangle choke, guillotine choke).

Davis is scheduled to fight Alessandro Botti on the Bellator London card at The SSE Arena, on 23/11/2019 and Alfie will no doubt want to extend his winning streak and continue making waves in the Bellator/UK scene.

Gavin Hughes 10-1 (Bellator)

Lastly is Gavin “Big Tasty” Hughes. “Big Tasty” is another well rounded fighter hailing out of the UK, his professional record currently sits at 10-1 with an amateur record of 1-0. Hughes has won five of his fights via submission, four via KO/TKO and one coming via decision. Gavin is clearly a huge fan of the guillotine choke with four of his five submission wins coming via this choke but what makes him so entertaining to watch is you never know how his fights are going to end!

Hughes made his Bellator debut on the 4th of May this year against Mohammad Yahya and was victorious via rear-naked choke, what makes this win even sweeter for Hughes was that he proved he was able to comfortably bounce back from his first career loss. He has shown the fight needed to go right to the very top of the game and with his ambition of competing in the UFC he will be hoping to go on another win streak like his last one where he recorded nine on the bounce victories.

“Big Tasty” is yet to be scheduled with another fight but 2020 looks like it could be massive year for the versatile Liverpool based fighter as he will look to build on his Bellator debut win and continue moving through the ranks.
