Biography: John "Doomsday" Howard grew up in a rough area of Boston. When the 26-year-old talks about how he decided to be a fighter, it wasn't through traditional means, like wrestling in high school or college. While Howard may have participated in high school wrestling, that's not where his fighting acumen and desire came from. Howard got his start fighting in the streets.
That having been said, Howard was not an instigator of fights. As he puts it, he fought to defend himself. With a background like Howard's, you might expect to see a brawler with little to no technical ability. But that just isn't the case. Howard does indeed have knockout power, but he holds his own on the mat as well, having won most of his fights by submission. He also came very close to choking out Chris Wilson in his Octagon debut, who has only been submitted once and took Jon Fitch to a decision.
Howard began his career fighting at 185 pounds, but decided that the weight was too heavy when he was matched up with fighters who were significantly larger than he. All four of his losses came at the hands of middleweights, and two of them to current UFC middleweights Nick Catone and Dan Miller. Howard made the cut to 170 in 2008 and has gone 3-0 since. He currently fights out of the Wai Kru gym in Boston and will take on Tamdan McCrory at UFC 101.
