By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief Name: Timothy Jerome Grant
Professional MMA Record: 14-2
Biography: T.J. Grant is one of the favorite sons of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada, along with NHL Superstar Sydney Crosby. A brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Jorge Gurgel, Grant made an anticipated debut in the UFC in Montreal at UFC 97, and will make his U.S. debut at UFC 100.
He started training in jiu jitsu at the age of 15 after what he says was his mother's dislike of him and his brother's in house wrestling. From there he got into wrestling in high school and worked on MMA training after that.
He was a provincial wrestling champion three times, in 2001, 2002 and 2004. He was also Nova Scotia's representative in the 2001 Canada Games in London, Ontario. He started competing in mixed martial arts professionally in 2006, starting with six straight wins before dropping a decision loss.
He's lost now only twice en route to a 14-2 record. Through 15 fights in smaller promotions in Canada, Grant showed off an amazing aptitude for pulling off submissions, as he won 12 of his 15 fights via submission, with one coming by TKO. His two losses have come by way of a decision and a late submission.
Making his UFC debut against the always tough Ryo Chonan, one of the only fighters to hold a victory over Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, Grant out-worked Chonan to a successful debut by picking up a split decision of his own in Montreal.
He's now set to face Korean Judo specialist Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 100 with a chance for his highest profile bout ever.
