Strikeforce has a new Middleweight Champion, as 26-year-old Luke Rockhold pulled off the upset over Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza on Saturday at Strikeforce "Barnett vs. Kharitonov," earning a hard fought five-round decision in Cincinnati.
Rockhold won with scores of 50-45, 48-47, and 48-47, though most media scoring the event had Jacare winning the first round. Still, it came down to Rockhold's output and ability to survive or negate what the Champion threw at him.
It was a very back and forth fight, with three rounds being extremely close, but Rockhold captured the belt and let the emotions flow after the fight. It was his first fight in 19 months and the first time he had ever left the first round, but he showed he could fight for 25 minutes in going until the final bell. Jacare suffered his first loss since September of 2008.
