The UFC is rightfully loading up their August return to Brazil with plenty of that country's native fighters, and another matchup appears to be set for the event, as multiple published reports state that Thiago Tavares and Spencer Fisher will face off on the August 27 UFC Rio card.
Tavares is a ten fight veteran of the UFC, sporting a record of 5-4-1 inside the Octagon. However, after an impressive submission win over Pat Audinwood last September, Tavares was knocked out by Shane Roller in his last fight this March.
Fisher has been with the organization even longer, appearing in 15 fights inside the Octagon since 2005. However, a loss in this fight could be his last in the UFC, as he's gone just 1-3 in his last four fights, most recently losing a decision to Ross Pearson at UFC 127 in February.
UFC 134 takes place from the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro Brazil on August 27, headlined by a Middleweight Championship fight between Anderson Silva and Yushin Okami.
Penick's Analysis: This is a fight to weed one of them out of the UFC's packed lightweight roster. Though they've been longtime staples on UFC cards over the last several years, their recent results could mean their dismissal from the organization when there are 60 lightweights already contracted. The UFC is looking to significantly cut that number, and fights like this will help them do so. The winner gets another opportunity, the loser is hanging by a thread at best, but it makes for a good preliminary card fight with a lot on the line for both.
