Two lightweights will be fighting for their roster spot in the UFC on July 2, as the organization announced on Thursday a bout between Andre Winner and Anthony Njokuani for the UFC 132 card.
Winner, the Ultimate Fighter season nine runner-up, has gone 2-2 since losing to Ross Pearson in the season nine finals. The two losses have come in his last two fights, however, putting him in danger of being released with a third straight loss in the Octagon.
Njokuani, a multi-fight veteran of the UFC's former sister promotion World Extreme Cagefighting, has lost three of his last four fights under the Zuffa banner. He defeated Edward Faalaloto at WEC 52 in his final WEC appearance to snap a two-fight losing streak, but he was defeated by Edson Barboza in his UFC debut in March in the "Fight of the Night" at UFC 128.
UFC 132 takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, headlined by the Bantamweight Championship bout between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.
Penick's Analysis: This is a good lightweight matchup, but in such a crowded division the loser is almost assuredly going to find themselves released from the roster. Winner had a frustrating experience in his loss to Nik Lentz, but then went out and got submitted by Dennis Siver in his next bout. As for Njokuani, after a string of three "Knockout of the Night" wins in the WEC he was stopped twice in his next two fights. Each fighter is in desperate need of a win, and that should make for a heck of a fight in Las Vegas.
