Phil Davis got through Tim Boetsch last Saturday at UFC 123 with a highly impressive modified hammerlock submission, now being dubbed the "Mr. Wonderful," but he didn't leave Detroit unscathed.

Davis suffered a gash in his shin that wound up requiring 36 stitches, but the light heavyweight didn't even realize it, and UFC officials missed it after the fight as well, according to MMAWeekly.com.

"I have no idea [how the cut happened]. I just kept kicking, and I would not stop kicking, and if I felt like he was going to kick, I kicked him first," Davis said. "This is how bad it didn't hurt... it didn't hurt at all. You walk off the stage, and the doctor's like, 'does anything hurt?' I'm like, 'no bro, I feel awesome, I just won.' Then you go into the back and the doctor's ask again like, 'is anything hurt?' They sit you down; they're checking you out. I missed it, the UFC doctors missed it, and we saw a little blood trickling, but neither I nor the doctor had any idea it was as bad as it was."

The biggest surprise was how little bleeding their was for how deep the cut was. Davis said that was the one of the reasons he didn't realize it was anything major, but he's thankful he finally caught on to the severity of the gash.

"Thank God I didn't go home like that. Knowing me being me, I wouldn't have gotten medical attention right away and I would have gangrene and I'd probably lose my foot or something," he said. "Not even joking. It was cut all the way to the bone. It was about two inches to maybe two and a half inches long.

"It was deep and it should have been bleeding a lot."

Penick's Analysis: That's a nasty cut, but thankfully he did get it taken care of before suffering any type of infection. It's strange that they didn't catch it sooner, as there was clearly blood on Boetsch's side, and if they didn't see a cut on his midsection it should have been deduced that it came from Davis. But, it was caught and stitched up, and he'll just have to take a little extra time in recovery. Still, that is one tough s.o.b. to have a gash like that and not even notice it.
