In an exclusive video interview for ESPN, welterweight contender Jon Fitch spoke to MMATorch UK specialist Chris Park, backstage at the London O2 Arena during last weekend’s UFC 120.
Discussing the alleged No. 1 contender match-up between Jake Shields and Martin Kampmann, Fitch (who was said to be next in line) stated he would be 'p***ed off' should Shields be awarded a title shot after just one fight.
"I would like to fight the winner of that [Shields v Kampmann] fight," he told ESPN. "The next title shot is going to be four-to-six months after the Koscheck vs. GSP fight in December. That's a long time for the top guys not to be fighting.
"I myself like to stay busy, so I'd like to fight the winner of that fight. It makes a lot of sense, the fans get to see an extra fight, it's win-win."
Despite Thiago Alves confidently backing Martin Kampmann to take the win, Fitch predicts he would be fighting Shields to fight the ultimate No.1 contender.
"I know Jake really well and trained with him for a long time, he's tough, he's legit. He's going to win that fight."
