Rich Franklin is not going to be needing surgery on his broken arm after all.
Stuck in a full arm cast after blocking a kick from Chuck Liddell before knocking him out at UFC 115 in June, Franklin's been allowing it to heal for the last month.
Now, according to his business manager J.T. Stewart in comments made to MMAJunkie.com, Franklin has found out the surgery he was expected to face is no longer necessary.
He needed to make sure it healed correctly," Stewart said. "He was feeling good. A few days before (the doctor's appointment), he was telling some people, 'I don't think I'm going to need surgery. It's feeling pretty good.'"
"If it hadn't healed correctly, they would have had to probably re-break or reset it and put it back in a big cast. It would have been a setback."
Franklin's now been placed in a smaller, lighter weight forearm cast. Although he still can't lift weight with the arm for some time, a return in December or January is expected.
Franklin is also raffling off his arm cast, signed by both Chuck Liddell and himself, to benefit breast-cancer research with the Susan G. Komen for the Cure charity. To purchase a $5 raffle ticket for the cast, visit Franklin's website at www.AmericanFighter.com.
Penick's Analysis: That's great news for Franklin. It's still incredible that he was able to not only continue fighting, but win that fight with his main power arm broken. If December is a possibility, I think there's still a good possibility we see him against Forrest Griffin on the year end card as the co-main event under Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck.
