Brock Lesnar took everything that Shane Carwin could dish out at UFC 116 in Las Vegas on Saturday night, and he still left the Octagon the UFC Heavyweight Champion.
Carwin unleashed a vicious assault in the first round, rocking Lesnar with punches and unloading shots on the ground against the cage. Lesnar covered up and survived the assault, and pushed Carwin into the second round for the first time in the challenger's career.
In the second round, Carwin was noticeably slowed, and Lesnar got an early takedown. He set up an arm triangle from half guard before making a nice pass to the mount and then immediately to side control.
Carwin tried to fight off the submission, but Lesnar tightened the hold up and forced Carwin to tap right before he went unconscious. The second round submission was Lesnar's first career submission victory, and Carwin's first career loss.
Lesnar was humble in his post fight interview, saying the night was about his family, doctor's and trainers for getting him back here. He said he was a humble Champion but still the toughest son of a bitch. After what he survived in the first round, that's an apt title.
Penick's Analysis: This fight delivered everything fans could have hoped for. Carwin gave Lesnar all he could handle, had him seriously hurt in the first round and answered some questions about the Champion. Lesnar then proved even more just how good he is after only six fights, and took advantage of a punched out Carwin in the second. It was an incredible main event that lived up to its billing and then some, and Lesnar surely proved his doubters wrong.
