Miesha Tate suffered some serious damage against Sara McMann on Saturday night at UFC 183, but she finished strong in the final seven minutes to eek out a majority decision.
At the post-fight press conference, Tate revealed that she suffered a broken orbital bone in the first round of the fight, and will need four to six weeks to heal.
"I'm happy emotionally, but physically, I'm definitely not feeling so hot right now," Tate said (via MMAJunkie.com). "... I know it doesn't look too bad, but it feels crappy... I have a really bad headache right now. She clipped me pretty good in the first round. She actually broke my orbital bone in two spots, so I can't look down, and this bright light over here is not very comfortable, to say the least."
"She's as tough as they come. She can pack a punch, that's for sure."
Tate's hoping the win has drawn her closer to another title fight in the UFC Women's Bantamweight division, but she's willing to take whatever fights she needs to in order to get back there.
"If it's Ronda [Rousey who wins at UFC 184], obviously I think I have a little bit more work to do," Tate said. "If it's Cat [Zingano], I think a better argument could be made. So we'll see who wins out of those two.
"But I've already told everyone I'm willing to do what it takes to get back to that. I'm not asking for it right now. I'm not asking for any handouts. I'm willing to put my nose to the grindstone. I'm willing to beat all the other top contenders until I am the only option left, if that's what I have to do."
Penick's Analysis: Tate was lucky to get out of Vegas with another win after that first round, and though it still goes down as a win, she's not going to be next in line no matter who wins next month. A Zingano win likely sets up an immediate rematch, and Tate will probably be behind Holly Holm and presumably Cris Cyborg, who may make it to the UFC for that Rousey fight by late this year or early 2016. If Tate can win two more fights in 2015, she might have a chance for a title fight in 2016, but she definitely has more work to do.
