Frankie Edgar completely broke Cub Swanson on Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 57, systematically wearing him down on the ground before scoring the latest finish in a UFC fight ever.
The fight started as a competitive matchup, with Swanson connecting on some solid striking exchanges in the first round and getting to his feet after a couple of takedowns. However, those takedowns were a harbinger of things to come, and it just got worse for him as the fight wore on.
Edgar out-struck him early in the second, though it was still competitive early, then scored a takedown that ultimately kept Swanson down for the remainder of the round. He did some damage in the last couple of minutes of ground and pound, and he kept that as the theme through the final 15 minutes.
It started going south for Swanson in the third, as Edgar busted him up badly on the ground and wouldn't let him up, doing enough to arguably earn a 10-8 frame, but it was the fourth and fifth which felt like a finish could come at any point.
Edgar had Swanson mounted several times over the final ten minutes, relentlessly delivering punishment as he continued to pass to more advantageous positions while simultaneously looking for openings. It looked like Edgar might be on his way to one of the more lopsided decisions in UFC history, but instead, he caught Swanson with a nasty looking neck crank that made Swanson tap almost immediately, bringing an end to the fight with just four seconds remaining in the bout.
Afterward, Edgar said he's coming for Jose Aldo's belt, and hopes this was a statement enough to make the UFC give him another shot at the UFC Featherweight Champion.
