The three big names in Women's MMA not in the UFC yet in 2014 are Cris Cyborg, Gina Carano, and Holly Holm. The three each have differing levels of legitimacy and drawing power, but all three have been spoken of in the context of a future fight with Ronda Rousey.
UFC President Dana White was asked on Wednesday, during an appearance on UFC Tonight on Fox Sports 1, which of the three would make it to the UFC first, and it seemed clear that Carano and Holm are a lot closer than the former Strikeforce Women's Featherweight Champion.
"I don't know, that's a good question," White responded. "Obviously, we know all the issues that we've had with Cyborg. From the steroid stuff to the managers to we don't even have that weight class, so I don't know when she would get into the UFC."
"Holly Holm and Gina Carano are all a matter of getting a deal done."
When asked if that meant he was still indeed interested in Holm, White said simply, "Yeah. Yep."
That said, despite negativity directed towards Cyborg consistently, and the increased unlikelihood of her entrance into the UFC, White refuses to rule anything out.
"I used to say never," White commented. "I don't say never anymore."
Penick's Analysis: Holm seems the most realistic in the shortest time frame, just because she's active and in the weight class, and it's just on the two sides to agree on a deal. As for Cyborg, if she makes 135 lbs. successfully, things change for her, and the thought of her in the UFC becomes more of a plausible idea. As for Carano, if they sign her, they sign her. Until they do, she's someone who hasn't fought in five and a half years. There's nothing more to say on her until she's actually fighting.
