By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief James Irvin gets back into action this May after what will have been nearly a year out of competition after being knocked out by Anderson Silva and subsequently suspended as he tested positive for the pain killers Methodone and Oxymorphone. AroundTheOctagon.com reports that Irvin will be meeting Drew McFedries in Las Vegas on the UFC 98 card on May 23rd. That show is also set to play host to the Matt Serra vs. Matt Hughes grudge match, and could be the home of the Undisputed Heavyweight Championship bout between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir.
Irvin had just come off an eight-second knockout of Houston Alexander before his loss to Silva at last July's Fight Night 14, the event put together to counter-program Affliction's first pay-per-view Banned. He's now making his first drop to middleweight to face McFedries.
McFedries has only won one fight in his last four attempts, including two straight losses to Mike Massenzio and Thales Leites. He'll be looking to rebound to try to keep his job in the UFC.
Penick's Analysis: This should be a hard hitting, fists flying style match-up and you can be sure McFedries will be desperately trying to come out on top. It's going to be a tough task against Irvin, though, who is still a dangerous fighter who was simply beaten by one of the best, if not the best, fighters in the world in Anderson Silva last July. This should be a good undercard fight for that May 23rd event.
