A major middleweight matchup was scrapped Friday morning when Costa Philippou suffered an injury that has taken him out of a fight against Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza.
According to a report from MMAFighting.com, Philippou suffered a cut above his eye which has pulled him from the bout at UFC on FX 8 this month in Brazil.
It's an especially unfortunate injury given the status of both in the 185 lb. division. Philippou was entering with a five fight win streak, having most recently defeated Tim Boetsch in December. Former Strikeforce Champ "Jacare" was set to make his UFC debut, and off a win over the UFC's Ed Herman, no less.
With the event happening in just over two weeks, there's no word as to whether Souza will remain on the card. The event takes place from Joragua do Sul on May 18, headlined by the middleweight bout between Vitor Belfort and Luke Rockhold.
