Four fighters earned an extra $50,000 on Saturday night for their efforts at UFC 156, with two fairly significant upsets among them.
The "Knockout of the Night" was a no-brainer, going to Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva for an incredible come from behind finish over Alistair Overeem in the third round of their bout. Silva was clearly down two rounds to none into the frame, and needed a finish to come out with a win. He got that just 25 seconds in with a brutal series of strikes against the cage, earning his biggest career win and taking Overeem out of the title picture.
Strikeforce import Bobby Green then took the "Submission of the Night" in an upset over Jacob Volkmann on the night's preliminary card. After Volkmann seemed to gas out early, Green took control late, and scored a rear naked choke late in the third round to earn the upset win in his UFC debut.
"Fight of the Night" went to the main event between Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar, a deserved honor after their fantastic five round Championship fight. Aldo ultimately emerged with the title around his waist once again, but Edgar showed he can hang with the best at 155 and 145 lbs. with a gritty effort that saw him get stronger as the fight wore on.
