The UFC is making a quick turnaround between events in Montreal, heading back to the Bell Centre in March just four months after UFC 154 emanated from the venue, but they've arguably already put together a stronger card for UFC 158 than they brought with UFC 154, and it starts with the main event between Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz.
"Georges St-Pierre asked to fight Nick Diaz because he knows they have unfinished business, and Nick Diaz agrees," commented UFC President Dana White in a press release announcing the card.
The bout has come at the behest of the Champion, who certainly had other offers available as his next opponent. However, Diaz was the man he wanted to face, and it's a fight he's very much looking forward.
"There's been a lot of talk about who I should fight next but this was really the only choice for me," St-Pierre said. "He's made it personal and I personally can't wait."
That works just fine for Diaz, who will fight for the first time since February of this year after a split decision loss to Carlos Condit and a year long suspension for a positive drug test for marijuana metabolites.
"This is the fight I want," Diaz said. "I want to go out there and beat Georges St-Pierre in Montreal and show that I'm the best welterweight in the world."
The welterweight action will continue on the card with Carlos Condit vs. Rory MacDonald and Johny Hendricks vs. Jake Ellenberger on March 16, and tickets for the event will go on sale to the general public on January 19.
