Following four straight losses over the last 19 months of his career in the UFC, Mark Hominick has decided to retire from mixed martial arts.

The longtime veteran made the announcement on Tuesday night on a new episode of UFC Tonight on Fuel TV.

"Over the last 11 years, I've followed my passion in the UFC. Now, I'll say UFC 154 was my last fight in the Octagon as I’m retiring and moving on to next phase of my career," Hominick said. "I have a young daughter at home and another on the way. I'll always be involved in the sport. But I know the commitment I have to make. I have to make a commitment to this as I have to fighting in the past."

Hominick went on a four fight winning streak under the Zuffa banner from 2010 to 2011, winning three fights in the WEC and one in the UFC to earn a shot at the UFC Featherweight Championship. He took on Jose Aldo in front of 55,000 fans at UFC 129, and though he lost four of the five rounds, he finished strong in the fifth and final frame.

However, he took an unfortunate and fast drop from there. In his next bout, he was knocked out by Chan Sung Jung immediately in the second fastest knockout in UFC history. Then, he dropped a tough split decision to Eddie Yagin in April before being beaten handily by Pablo Garza at UFC 154 last month.

Penick's Analysis: Hominick's slide was unfortunate, as he was always fun to watch inside the cage. But he took a very noticeable dip in his performance in the Yagin and Garza fights, especially, and he just simply wasn't the same after the loss to Jung. Given he had lost four straight, the UFC wasn't likely to offer him another fight, so rather than attempt to continue on outside of the Octagon, he's decided to hang up the gloves. It might be the correct move for him, but he'll definitely be missed in the cage.
