"I've considered going to lightweight. As soon as my trainer decides that I can go up, then I will. This fight with Edgar will be a turning point. If I can win [against] him well, then I can prove that I can go [to lightweight]. He has a very strong reputation thanks to destroying several opponents. That's the motivation for me to face him and that will be probably my last biggest challenge [at featherweight].
It would have been a great fight in Brazil since Edgar is very popular in Brazil. Edgar is popular in Brazil because he has a lot of stamina, he never gives up, and he has a very good heart. But it's a very special week with the Super Bowl and I'm really happy for that... There will always be pressure, either for me or Edgar. But we're both on such a high level that we disregard pressure. We just do our jobs and everything will be fine. I see it as a challenge. Frank already proved that he is a trooper, he will go to fight all five rounds, and he doesn't give up. This is the fight I wanted."
-UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo talks to MMAFighting.com about a potential move to lightweight if he defeats Frankie Edgar at UFC 156 in February.
Penick's Analysis: There are still a number of interesting potential fights for Aldo in the featherweight division, so I really wouldn't mind seeing him stay at featherweight where he's dominated for so long. With that said, there are also a lot of highly intriguing fights in the lightweight division, and if he feels he can handle what will be a more significant size disadvantage in many fights, it could be a chance for him to continue building a legacy in the sport. His run at featherweight has been incredible as it is, and if he beats Edgar it will be that much more impressive, but regardless of whether he continues on at 145 lbs. or moves up, it will certainly be exciting to watch.
