Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva enters Friday's UFC on FX 5 event in desperate need of a win. Though his consecutive stoppage losses have come against top flight competition in Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez, they were nevertheless consecutive stoppage losses.
As he enters this matchup against Travis Browne, Silva is planning on making it a decisive and quick finish for the fans in Minneapolis. In fact, Silva says he won't let the fight hit the third round.
"This is a very important fight for me, and I won't let it go past the second round," Silva said at the open workouts this week. "It is a five round fight but, five rounds or three rounds, I don't like decisions on my record. I will do my best to finish Travis Browne inside two rounds."
One of the interesting aspects of this fight that Silva will need to deal with is the fact that he'll actually be the smaller fighter. It's a rare occurrence for him, but it's not something he's worried about into Friday's main event.
"He's the second or third person I’ve fought who is bigger than me, but it does not matter, it is no problem," Silva said. "I know I can take him down to the ground and ground and pound him – for sure that is where I am very dangerous. But I have been training very, very hard on my standup. He is a very tough guy, undefeated, but I am so, so confident I will beat him inside two rounds."
Penick's Analysis: Silva's path to victory is definitely to put Brown on his back and try to score a ground and pound stoppage. That's where he's at his best, and if he puts Browne on the ground, he'll have the opportunity to showcase that part of his game. If he fails to do that, standing and striking with Browne may not go well through him, especially through a five round fight. Browne has a lot of power, and after a couple of KO losses in a row, Silva's going to need to be wary of that.
