If you were expecting a submission finish in the UFC on Fuel 5 bout between Paul Sass and Matt Wiman, surely you were expecting the undefeated Sass to be the one to latch it on. He had won all but one of his fights by submission, including three straight inside the Octagon, and hoped to continue that streak against longtime UFC vet Wiman.
However, it was the 29-year-old Wiman shocking everyone at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England, by snatching an armbar and forcing the tap in the first round.
The fight didn't begin as planned, as he got taken down almost immediately by Sass. The 24-year-old wanted to showcase his improved striking, so he landed some strikes from the top and looked for an opening for a heel hook. He nearly locked it on, but Wiman fought out.
Working from his back, Wiman wasn't about to go down easily, and he attacked with a triangle attempt, only to have Sass pop out of the hold. However, from there, Wiman went for an armbar. This time, though Sass tried to fight through, he held onto the hold, and Sass was finally forced to submit.
The loss snapped the 13-fight winning streak that kicked off Sass' career, and for Wiman it was his fifth win in six fights, moving him to 9-3 over his last 12 bouts.
