In a fight most observers deemed to be close to a pick 'em fight going in, undefeated UFC middleweight fighter Chris Weidman gave the performance of the year en route to a second round TKO victory over highly touted veteran Mark Munoz. The Serra-Longo prospect Weidman dominated literally every second of the fight in San Jose California.
Weidman landed a quick takedown to begin the fight, and Munoz was unable to pose any defense to Weidman's grappling game. When Munoz managed to get to his feet, Weidman dropped him with two quick knees whcih sent Munoz back to the mat. Weidman spent most of the round working for D'Arce and guillotine chokes.
After getting another quick takedown in the opening seconds of the second round, round number two played out similarly to round one until Munoz managed to get the fight back to standing about one minute into the round. That was the beginning of the end for Munoz. Munoz couldn't reach Weidman with his jab, due to a seven inch reach disadvantage for Weidman. Ad Munoz dove in for a jab, Weidman landed a perfectly placed short right elbow ot the forehead which immediately dropped The Filipino Wrecking Machine. Eighteen unanswered shots on the ground later, Josh Rosenthal mercifully pulled Weidman off of the bloody Munoz.
In his post-fight interview with cmomentator Jon Anik, Weidman promptly called out UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. "I want Anderson Silva," Weidman said. "Every time I've had a full training camp I've got the finish. Every single time. give me a full training camp and I'd love a shot at the man, Anderson Silva. I really think I'd do pretty good."
With the victory, Weidman improves his record to 9-0, 5-0 with the UFC. Mark Munoz saw his record drop to 12-3, 7-3 inside the octagon.
