The flyweight rematch between Demetrious Johnson and Ian McCall may be on its way this April, as CagedInsider.com reports that both camps are targeting the month for a second fight.
The two fought to a draw on Friday at UFC on FX 2 in Australia, which should have netted them a "sudden death" round to send one fighter into the first ever UFC Flyweight Championship bout. However, the scores were tabulated incorrectly, and Johnson was announced as the victor.
Once the mistake was realized, it was too late to adjust anything, so the two will square off once more to determine a winner. For his part, semifinal winner Joseph Benavidez is fine waiting out the rematch, and he's actually looking forward to seeing Johnson and McCall fight once again.
"My initial thought is, 'I'm pretty excited to see that fight again,'" Benavidez said after the event (transcribed by MMAJunkie.com. "It was awesome. When it ended, that's what I thought. 'That could be a draw. That could be a split.' You just never know. It was a great, and it's awesome they get to do it again. Because I think it was a draw."
"I definitely, 100 percent want to wait for the title shot between these guys," he continued. "They picked the best four guys to compete in this tournament, and those are the two best guys. ... I don't see anyone else as deserving as them, so I'm happy to wait for them."
"I'm just excited to fight whoever comes out of that one because they'll be the next best flyweight, and we'll battle for that title."
Penick's Analysis: An April date for this fight would mean only a month or two delay for Benavidez, provided the winner doesn't suffer an injury in that rematch. Still, it was a fantastic back and forth fight last weekend, and should make for a very good rematch as well. It's a complete mess of a situation because they had a plan in place for this very result, but they'll eventually get to the Title fight they'd like to have put together later this year.
