WSOF 22
AUGUST 1, 2015
FROM LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

The World Series of Fighting decided to go head to head with Ronda Rousey and UFC 190 tonight, so our coverage on the card will be a bit delayed. We'll have results of the undercard and full play by play on the night's two title fights at the conclusion of tonight's UFC 190 card, so tune in later tonight to see how the Moraes' fare, as well as the result of the Welterweight Title bout between Rousimar Palhares and Jake Shields.

Non title fight quick results

Islam Mamedov defeats Jimmy Spicuzzaby TKO at 4:47 of round one

Abubakar Nurmagomedov defeats Jorge Moreno by unanimous decision

Clifford Starks defeats Mike Lyle by unanimous decision

FIGHT ONE: MARLON MORAES VS. SHEYMON MORAES (BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

- Sheymon is 2 inches taller than Marlon (no relation) with a 2.5 inch reach advantage.

- Sheymon milks his moment in the sun with the slowest walk to the cage in history. I've seen bald men grow hair faster than his walk.

- Stitch Duran is Maron's cutman, which of course guarantees that Moraes wins because apparently Stitch is MMA Jesus.

- I'm going to air all of my public grievances with Jamie sometime, and we'll see just how long I stick here after that.

- Of course, I have no grievances with Jamie because he's just the bestest boss ever.

- Back to business. the referee for this fight will be (Was?) Mark Smith.

ROUND ONE: Marlon is the more active fighter early. More feints, quicker movements. Marlon lands a sharp left about a minute in. Sheymon lands a nice right to the body. Good flurry from Marlon, highlighted with a strong left high kick. Marlon's handspeed is fantastic tonight. He's landing everything he throws. Marlon shoots a double and briefly gets the takedown, but Sheymon pops back up. Marlon has him against the cage. Sheymon eventually pushes Marlon off of him and we're back to the middle with 75 seconds remaining. Marlon lands a nice left hand followed by a right to the body. Overhand right from Marlon. 10-9 Marlon Moraes Marlon is so much faster.

ROUND TWO: Fast body kick from Sheymon. Marlon responds with an equally quick low kick. This made Edson Barboza happy. Sheymon lands a loud left body kick, but Marlon catches the recoil and almost trips Sheymon down. Todd Harris and Bas Rutten are gushing over Frankie Edgar and Stitch Duran being in attendance. Marlon drops Sheymon with a huge left hook, right hook combo. Sheymon pops back up and got lucky that he fell so far back, because Marlon rocked him. Sheymon got up before Marlon could get on him. Marlon starting to circle and work his jab and the forward moving Sheymon. Sheymon lands a hard right to the chin of Marlon, but Marlon must be a freaking cyborg, because he just took it like it was nothing. Marlon takes a kick to the nuggets, but the ref doesn't pause the fight for it. Nice kick to the ribs from Marlon. Sheymon lands a high body kick of his own. 20-18 Marlon Fun fight through two rounds.

ROUND THREE: Push kick from Sheymon almost lands where it shouldn't. Sheymon is a good striker, but his lack of lateral movement is playing into Marlon's hands. No combos from him? Bad plan, brah. Sheymon ducks low to land on the body of Marlon. Sheymon's showing more movement this round, but he's still not throwing much. MArlon lands a hard right hook to the back of Sheymon's head. Sheymon felt that, for sure. Marlon continually circling to Sheymon's power side, and eats a hard high body kick. Both guys swinging wildly out of nowhere, but Sheymon takes the worst of it, landing on his back after a wild left hook from MArlon. Marlon dives into side control near the fence. Marlon jumps to mount and gets on Sheymon's back. Sheymon has to fight off the choke for 90 seconds. And... he got about 5 seconds in and tapped out. Moraes is a pitbull.

WINNER: Marlon Moraes by submission (rear naked choke) at 3:46 of round three.

STAR RATING (***-) This was a lot of fun. Sheymon Moraes is a very skilled standup fighter, but is in a different league from Marlon Moraes. Nice moment in the interview; Marlon was holding his baby while being interviewed. The baby started to cry, as babies are wont to do when their daddy is awkwardly holding them while tons of people are screaming and bright lights are shining, so he had to hand the baby off. Neither here nor there, but I liked it, so there. As to the fight, I think Marlon Moraes great. It's a shame he doesn't want to test himself against good fighters.

FIGHT TWO: ROUSIMAR PALHARES VS. JAKE SHIELDS (WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

- Palhares and Shields get into it, jaw to jaw, before they're officially announced. You don't see that very often. Shields is riled up, so maybe this time if he gets on top he'll, you know, DO SOMETHING OFFENSIVE. And I don't mean like with racist tweets or whatnot.

- Steve Mazzagatti is the referee. So, that's somewhat offensive, at least it is to the sport itself and both of these fighters.

ROUND ONE: Kinda wishing one of these guys wore Reebok. Shields with an immediate takedown. Palhares rolling immediately, but Shields is staying on top and centered. Shields grabs a leg as Palhares gets up, and Shields takes him back down. Full guard. Palhares turns to his side, and Shields matches him move for move and we're back to guard with Palhares flat on his back again. Half-guard. Palhares is squirming more than a five year old whose teacher won't let her go to the bathroom, and Shields is staying belly to belly. Shields gets side control, but Palhares squirms out the back door and we're back to standing. Shields shoots a single from like a mile away, but it gets Palhares down easily enough. side control near the cage. Shields is getting offensive positions and playing putch perfect defense so far. Palhares is adjusting and throwing elbows from the bottom, trying to get Shields to change course. Shields is cut open and bleeding on Palhares' throat. Palhares is the more effective striker from his back. Half-guard. Palhares is looking for an arm, because Shields isn't letting Palhares get within a mile of his legs. 10-9 Shields Palhares was striking effectively from the bottom, but Shields spent more than 4.5 minutes on top. Palhares looks frustrated.

ROUND TWO: Position before submission. That's the advice Shields got between rounds. And that was clearly his mantra for round one. Shields shoots a double and gets Palhares down, much to the amazement of Todd Harris, who has never seen a Jake Shields fight or something. Shields almost got his back but wound up in side control. Palhares squirms for a leg, and Shields immediately gives up position and crawls in to full guard. Belly to belly. Palhares is firing elbows from several angles. Shields gets to his feet, and them slowly crawls back in to guard. He wants side control, but Palhares locks up one of Shields' legs with his own legs. Full guard now. Shields trying to pass, Palhares denies. Sheilds is eating a lot of elbows because he's staying so far back in the guard, which puts his face in range of Palhares' elbows. Shields is complaining to Mazzagatti about an eye gouge. Shields slides into full mount with two minutes left. Belly to belly, so notmuch offense. Sheilds is repeatedly complaining about eye pokes. Mazzagatti stops the fight to warn Palhares while Shields sits up. Mazzagatti is a freaking clown. The fight restarts and Palhares gouges Shields' eye again. So, Mazzagatti givesHammil a win over Jones, but won't take a point for a literal dozen eye gouges. OK. Great. Shields sits up and throws a couple punches, but Palhares bucks him off and almost grabs a leg. Shields lost the position, but he's still on top, in full guard. Palhares punching away at the ears of Shields. Ears are legal, at least. Mazzagatti tells Palhares to watch his fingers, but doesn't take a point. Palhares responds by going back to the eyes as the round ends. 20-18 Shields At the end of the round, Shields loudly, and profanely, tells Mazzagatti that Palhares is gouging his eyes. Shields is pissed, and not just for losing mount the one time he thought about landing some offense. Palhares is a dirty piece of shit.

ROUND THREE: Before the round begins, Mazzagatti warns Palhares about the fingers to the eyes. He also asked a deaf man how he was doing, which was just as effective as this will be. Shields shoots and gets a takdown, but thistimePalhares gets back up. Shields shoots again and gets stuffed. Shields lands several stiff (read, mechanical, not hard) jabs and eats a knee as he shoots a takedown. Doesn't get it, and winds up with his back to the cage. Both guys look gassed. Shields shoots another takedown. He gets it, but he's stuffed and has Palhares on top of him while he's turtled. Back to standing, and Palhares presses him against the fence. Shields circles away. Palhares kciks and gets ttaken down. Palhares sweeps with a kimura and it's over! Shields tapped to a kimura. And holy crap, Palhares held it two seconds too long! That dirty son of a bitch did it again! Shields isn't damaged, as he managed to punch Palhares with the kimura'd arm before he got up. Palhares needs to be arrested. Mazzagatti let Shields tap his left hand four times before he broke it up, and then Shields tapped his hand six more times before Palhares let it go.

WINNER: Rousimar Palhares by submission (kimura) at 2:02 of round three.

STAR RATING (***) First of all, this was a fascinating fight. Shields fought perfectly, but gassed out. He got sloppy as a result on his last takedown, got swepy by the arm, and it was over just like that.

While the decision was being announced, Shields was busy berating Ray Sefo for the piece of crap welterweight champion that they enable. After Palhares was asked one question, they went to Jake Shields. He has gouges under his right eye. There's no reason this fight shouldn't have ended in a second round DQ. Shields claims 8 eye gouges, and I believe that. Palhares is dirty, stupid, and should be stripped of his title, job, jewels, home, lot in life, good karma, place in heaven, and other good things.
