Former UFC Champions Tim Sylvia and Jens Pulver will be back in action this December, as they will co-headline a co-promoted CFX/Extreme Challenge show at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minn. on December 11, according to MNMMANews.com.
Sylvia has won three straight fights, most recently a TKO victory over Paul Buentello at the Powerhouse World Promotions: War on the Mainland card in August. He's tentatively slated to meet Pedro Rizzo in February for PWP, but he reportedly wanted to return to action prior to that.
Sylvia will face off against 19-16 Vince Lucero, who was originally slated to meet UFC veteran Travis Wiuff on the card. Wiuff will remain on the card, but no opponent has been found for him as of yet.
Pulver continues to return to the cage despite losing eight of his last nine fights. He met Diego Garijo at the "War on the Mainland" card in August in the first fight since his release from Zuffa's WEC, but he suffered his fourth straight first round submission loss. Pulver will meet the 6-3 Frank Johnson, who fights out of St. Paul, Minn.
Tickets for the event are on sale at Ticketmaster.com, with tickets ranging from $25-$200.
Penick's Analysis: It saddens me to see Pulver get back into the cage yet again. He got rocked by Garijo before getting submitted in quick fashion in that fight in August, and he's been stopped five straight times now. This will be a fight he should win, but with how his recent career has gone, there's no telling how he'll contend in the fight. As for Sylvia, I'm a little curious to see why he's taking a fight like this, against a fighter like Lucero, after defeating Buentello and having a fight lined up with Rizzo. Again, this is a fight he should win, and if he's got any thoughts of ever going back to the UFC he'll need to win this fight, it's just a curious fight for him to take. Of course, both are involved in the card because of their manager Monte Cox, as Cox is co-promoting the event with the CFX promotion. CFX ran a Target Center event back in April with Jeff Monson and more. If fans in Minnesota want to skip out on watching UFC 124 to see some live MMA, this is definitely an option for them.
