The World Series of Fighting will crown a new Welterweight Champion this April, but the fight for that title will no longer be between Jake Shields and Jon Fitch.
The organization announced - via a bit of a snide article penned by WSOF President Ray Sefo at WSOF.com - that Shields would not sign a bout agreement for that fight, and now Fitch will instead face Joao Zeferino at WSOF 30.
Sefo stated that Shields remains under contract, but that he "does not intend to honor the terms of his existing contract at this time."
Though not entirely clear what prompted that decision, they plan to set him up with another fight soon.
The WSOF Welterweight Title was taken from the now-suspended Rousimar Palhares after he held yet another submission in his fight with Shields last summer. Fitch, who also lost to Palhares by submission, defeated another former UFC title challenger in Yushin Okami in his last outing. Zeferino, meanwhile, went 2-1 in one night during WSOF's lightweight tournament in November, submitting both Brian Foster and Jorge Patino before getting stopped by Foster in their immediate rematch in the finals.
