In one of the biggest upsets in Bellator history, Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal was knocked out by Emanuel Newton on Thursday night at Bellator 90.
The former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion was lauded as a superstar into his Bellator debut, with a full hour long special showcasing his entrance into the organization and into professional wrestling with Spike's TNA Impact Wrestling. He won his first fight in the organization last month, knocking out Przemyslaw Mysiala in his first fight in just over a year.
However, he looked off in that fight before scoring the knockout win, and that continued into the fight with Newton. He tried to shoulder roll with his left hand down at his side, and left himself open to several strikes in the opening minutes of the fight. Then, after Newton missed an overhand right, he quickly spun around with a back fist that knocked Lawal out on his feet. As he slowly fell to the ground, Newton landed one more strike before the referee got in.
Newton was as high as a +1200 underdog into the semifinal fight, and he cashed that upset in with a huge finish. He'll now meet Mikhail Zayats in the finals of the season eight light heavyweight tournament.
