Strikeforce's January event has taken a few hits already from what they hoped to put together, but plans are still moving forward for the January 12 event in Oklahoma City. 2012 hasn't been a great year for the promotion, which was purchased by Zuffa in 2011, and after two event cancellations in a row, the January card is expected to be the final event in Strikeforce's history.
Suffice it to say, things haven't gone exactly to plan for the Zuffa-owned Strikeforce. UFC President Dana White had been excited to do something with Strikeforce when they first purchased them, but ran into problems with Showtime once again, so he took himself out of the equation.
Whatever ideas he may have had in mind for Strikeforce didn't come to fruition, and now the organization is on its last breath. It's not how White wanted things to go, and he expressed his disappointment in Strikeforce's failings this year following UFC 154.
"I am [disappointed]," White said after the event (via MMAJunkie.com). "I don't want to talk any s---, though. I could for about four hours. But I won't. It's not worth it."
Still, White plans on attending Strikeforce's January event in Oklahoma City, which is now down to two of the four fights originally scheduled.
Penick's Analysis: It was surprising enough that Strikeforce got an extra year on Showtime, and it was clearly not the same after losing Dan Henderson, Nick Diaz, Alistair Overeem, and then the rest of the heavyweight division. White did seem really excited about some of the changes he wanted to make, but Showtime opted to keep things as they were, and White getting out of the situation certainly didn't bode well for their future. The writing's been on the wall for some time, but now it's just about over with, and White will be in attendance to watch it go out.
