I know everybody has been clamoring for it, so I've decided to bring
back the betting and prediction contests! First administered by Randy
Rowles, then by resident MD Jerry Cattelane, the contests are now back
in their third incarnation, led by your's truly. This time we're
starting over from scratch. Currently everybody is on the same even
ground. Starting with UFC 83 on Saturday, everyone will be in the same
pool together, with the top two in each contest moving on to UFC 84 on
May 24th to do battle head-to-head. The winners at UFC 84 will then be
crowned the NEW MMATorch prediction and betting champions!
PREDICTION CONTEST:
I'm pretty sure everyone knows how this works by now, but just
in case...Basically you pick the winners of each fight, including
method (e.g. KO, submission, decision) and round. The winner is the one
who picks the most fights correctly. Ties will be broken by who had the
most number of rounds and methods correctly predicted. In case anyone
is wondering, only rounds and methods in fights you predicted the
correct winner count. So here's the line-up. Good luck to all!
1- Ed Herman (-105) vs. Damian Maia (EVEN)
2- Cain Velasquez (EVEN) vs. Brad Morris (-130)
3- Alan Belcher (-430) vs. Jason Day (+390)
4- Kuniyoshi Hironaka (-125) vs. Jonathan Goulet (-105)
5- Sam Stout (-110) vs. Rich Clementi (-120)
6- Jason MacDonald (-265) vs. Joe Doerksen (+250)
7- Mac Danzig (-640) vs. Mark Bocek (+600)
8- Michael Bisping (-640) vs. Charles McCarthy (+600)
9- Nate Quarry (-230) vs. Kalib Starnes (+205)
10- Rich Franklin (-600) vs. Travis Lutter (+560)
11- Matt Serra (C) (+560) vs. Georges St. Pierre (-600)
BETTING CONTEST:
As you can see, there's a number attached to each fighter. That
number represents how much money you can make off each fighter. The way
it works is, if a fighter has a positive number he's an underdog. The
positive number means if you were to bet $100 dollars on him, you would
make the amount of the positive number. For example, if you were to bet
$100 on Matt Serra and he won, you would make back the hundred you bet,
plus $560, for a total payout of $660.
If the fighter has a negative number, that number represents how much
you would have to bet to make $100 on the fighter. For example, if you
bet $600 on GSP and he won, you'd make back the $600, plus a $100
profit, for a total payout of $700.
Each contestant has $1000 in theoretical money. You can bet it on as
many fighters as you'd like, but you have to bet on at least three. And
please, for my sanity's sake, try to keep your bets in multiples of
$100, or at the worst $50. It'll make my calculations that much easier.
Well there you have it folks. The contests are back in all their glory.
You can either post your picks on the message boards, or email them to
me at matt6buckeye@hotmail.com if you don't want anyone to know your
picks. I'll be back tomorrow with a full preview of the show, including
my predictions and bets. Once again, good luck to everyone, for let's
have some fun around here for goodness sake!
