The Ultimate Fighter review
April 9, 2008
By Frank Hyden
The fights start early in this episode.
FIGHT 1- Dan Simmler vs. Matthew Riddle
Riddle gets a nice throw but both men scramble to their feet after some groundfighting. Dan tries a flying armbar but can't quite get it. The fight quickly dissolves into lots of grabbing. Then they do some boring stuff on the ground. Luckily, the round ends our misery. Round two opens with a humongous KO punch from Matthew. He crushes Dan, who moans on the ground like something from a horror movie. He looks totally and completely out of it and they take him to the hospital. Dan can't remember anything and has an obvious concussion. The finish was very similar to James Irvin knocking out Terry Martin a few years back. Martin bent into the flying knee from Irvin and Dan stepped into the right from Matthew. Totally brutal.
WINNER- Matthew Riddle
FIGHT 2- Luke Zachrich vs. Patrick Schultz
Pat throws some nice punches. They go to the ground and a scramble ensues. Luke slaps on a rear-naked choke and Patrick taps.
WINNER- Luke Zachrich
FIGHT 3- Tim Creduer vs. Erik Charles
Tim wins a quick fight with an armbar. Tim is great on the ground.
WINNER- Tim Creduer
FIGHT 4- Brandon Sene vs. Aaron Meisner
Highlights of this ground battle aired. Brandon wins with a rear-naked choke.
WINNER- Brandon Sene
FIGHT 5- Mike Marrello vs. Gerald Harris
Highlights aired of Gerald getting the tough decision win.
WINNER- Gerald Harris
FIGHT 6- Daniel Cramer vs. Jeremiah Riggs
Highlights of a tough brawl between these guys aired. Riggs is very rough around the edges but listened to everything Rampage was telling him. Unfortunately, his lack of experience was too much for him to overcome and Daniel wins the decision. Daniel definitely earned his way into the house here. If Riggs were more skilled he probably would have won, though.
WINNER- Daniel Cramer
FIGHT 7- Nick Rossborough vs. Jesse Taylor
Another ground-based fight. They scramble around until Jesse locks on the third rear-naked choke of the night.
WINNER- Jesse Taylor
FIGHT 8- Josh Hall vs. Matt Brown
A flurry by Josh to open. There's lots of not much in this fight. Good throw by Josh sends it to the ground. Matt slaps on a triangle but Josh manages to escape somehow. Great stuff on his part. Matt traps him and pounds out the win with just 3 seconds left in the first round.
WINNER- Matt Brown
The overlay comments add a good deal to the fights, in my opinion. This is especially the case without announcers talking throughout. It was sometimes very hard to hear what they were saying through all the noise but it's definitely something they should use as much as possible. The fights themselves were okay this week. Most people are only going to remember what happened to Dan Simmler anyway, though, so a series of okay fights is perfectly fine. That's the very definition of KTFO. Hopefully, Dan's doing fine by now and we can just chalk it up to one of those things that happen because he was carrying on like a punchdrunk boxer. The UFC will certainly be very cautious in dealing with his recovery. Hopefully, Dan will be equally as cautious and not jump right back into training.
NEXT WEEK- The season begins.
