UFC NEWS: Brock Lesnar to fight in hometown on Aug. 9 as UFC debuts in Minneapolis

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports today that Brock Lesnar will be fighting in his hometown of Minneapolis, Minn. where he went to college on Aug. 9. The Minnesota Boxing and MMA Commission was notified Monday that UFC has booked Target Center for a show that could feature Lesnar, Sean Sherk, and Brock Larson - all Minnesotans. (MMATorch is based in Minnesota, also.)
KELLER ANALYSIS: Lesnar is a local celebrity here in Minnesota, but not on a huge scale. He's a regular on the all-sports radio show morning show and his tryout with the Minnesota Vikings a few years back got a ton of publicity. His fight at Target Center, if it comes off as scheduled with no injuries, will be a huge story locally. It's smart of UFC to take advantage of the home town fighter marketing potential, as they're also doing with George's St. Pierre, to build up a stronger fanbase in a specific market to hopefully sell PPVs to in the future. Well, to the 2 percent of the population who can afford UFC's every-increasing monthly PPV prices, that is.
