CYBORG WARNS ABOUT DANGERS OF WEIGHT CUTTING

Cris Cyborg has revealed the cause of her USADA violation. In a post on Facebook, Cyborg stated that she used a diuretic called spironolactone that her doctor prescribed in order to help her recover from her last weight cut. She assured fans it had nothing to do with performance enhancement. “You can feel confident that the substance they are inquiring about is not for performance enhancing use, and is needed for my specific treatments,” she said.

She hopes to bring awareness to the difficulties of cutting weight with this incident and noted how frequently she had to cut weight this year. “It is my hope that my experiences will continue to bring awareness to the dangers of extreme weight cutting,” Cyborg wrote. “I cut weight three times in eight months during 2016 competing twice at 140 pounds. It is because of the measures needed to make the required 140 pound weight limit September 24 that my body is needing the on-going medical treatment.”

Cyborg will likely face a one year suspension for her violation.

Cervantes Analysis: She really shouldn’t have allowed herself to get so heavy in between fights, as she’s rumored to walk around 165-170 when not training. She knows how hard it is to cut weight and this isn’t the first time it’s been an issue for her. Like Dana White said, it really makes sense why she wasn’t willing to take a title when she was offered it several times before and the UFC dodged a bullet by opting to do the title fight without her. However, the UFC made a women’s featherweight division specifically for her and now she’ll be out of competition for a significant amount of time, meaning more bantamweight fighters will have to jump weight classes to keep the division exciting. It’ll be interesting to see what becomes of the division in the next year.

-Bellator, in hyping the Tito Ortiz vs. Chael Sonnen main event taking place in Los Angeles, Calif. and airing on Spike TV next month, touts the following in a press release to MMATorch: “Depending on who you ask, the beef between these two MMA megaliths stems from different causes, but Ortiz has made it clear (here) this fight became personal for him on January 23, 1998, when the two met in a collegiate wrestling match in Sonnen’s home state of Oregon. On that day, ‘The American Gangster’ got the best of ‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy,’ pinning him with a headlock in a mere 44 seconds. Now, thanks to our good friends at FloWrestling.org, that footage is available to the masses.
