Paul Daley open to Melvin Guillard fight after call out, thinks it makes route back to title contention “easier”

After finally scoring his first Bellator win on Friday night at Bellator 159, Melvin Guillard said his time at lightweight was at an end, and he called out Paul “Semtex” Daley for his welterweight debut.

That sounds just fine to Daley, who responded to the call out this weekend on Facebook.

“So former UFC contender at 155lbs/170lbs, and current Bellator fighter, Melvin “Young Assassin” Guillard, has called me out for a fight [at] 170lbs,” Daley wrote. “You know I don’t back down from a fight, plus I’m looking for a stepping stone back into title contention. Think he’s just made my route a little easier…

“Enjoyed my week off, we start our routine tomorrow and will await a date from Mr Coker for later this year.”

Daley looks for a bounce back win himself in his next outing following his Bellator 158 decision loss to Douglas Lima.

Penick’s Analysis: Daley-Guillard makes perfect sense to me. It’s a fight between two former UFC veterans at different stages of their respective careers, and though Daley’s further up the ladder his loss to Lima has him outside of the top end. A fun fight against a guy willing to play into his game makes for good fodder, and he’s going to have a good opportunity to put together a highlight reel finish.
