Thomas Almeida gunning for knockout over Cody Garbrandt at UFC Fight Night 88

By Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

“People changed my words a little bit. I didn’t say I will finish him in the first round, I said I wanted to knock him out in the second round. What he says is just big motivation for me. It will keep me motivated to do my best and do what I do best, which is my striking game and I hope we deliver a great show on Sunday night. No doubt this fight won’t go to decision. I’ll do my best to finish him, submit him, or knock him out as soon as possible. Like I always say, I don’t like to leave a fight for a decision for the judges. So I’ll do my best to finish him inside the five rounds.”

-Thomas Almeida talks to FoxSports.com about his UFC Fight Night 88 main event bout with Cody Garbrandt.

Penick’s Analysis: It would be quite surprising to see this fight go the distance. It’s a possibility, especially with Garbrandt’s wrestling and control game, but both also have violent tendencies and the ability to stop one another. Almeida more than Garbrandt is likely to stop the fight, but both have the skills to make this a competitive and entertaining five round fight. If Almeida does take Garbrandt out by knockout or submission it’s going to be another big statement for him in the division, and will drive him further to a potential title fight.
